Friends of Berthoud Pass is a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization staffed entirely by volunteers. We are committed to preserving the legacy of public recreation at Berthoud Pass by promoting safety education, backcountry access, and environmental stewardship.
What Volunteering Looks Like
Volunteering with FOBP involves giving back to the winter backcountry community through hands-on education and operational support. All members are expected to meet minimum participation requirements to stay active:
- Active participation in at least one Committee
- Volunteer at one Classroom Session
- Volunteer at two Events
- Attend the On Snow Instructor Refresher
- Volunteer at one On Snow day
What is Required for Volunteers
To ensure a consistent level of safety, preparedness, and technical knowledge, we have clear training paths for our members. FOBP supports its members by offering a reimbursement policy for approved technical and medical training costs.
Probationary Members (Year 0 to ~1)
- Must have completed and maintained a Level 1 Avalanche Education Course from an accredited provider.
- Must hold a current and valid CPR Certification.
- Must be able to plan and lead a group tour in complex avalanche terrain.
- Must demonstrate skiing/riding proficiency and the ability to teach FOBP curriculum.
*FOBP may request an in-person evaluation, such as a tour, to better evaluate an individual’s ability.
Active Members (Advancement Requirements)
Within three years of ending probationary membership, active members must complete the following:
- Avalanche Companion Rescue Training (or equivalent)
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Certification (or equivalent)
- Level 2 Avalanche Education Course
Note: Members are responsible for maintaining current certifications with a 1-year grace period.
