Taking action in our community
We offer 20+ two-hour avalanche awareness classroom presentations leading up to our full-day on snow sessions in mid-winter
Safety
In 2004, we launched a free grassroots avalanche education program across Colorado's Front Range, offering classroom and on-snow awareness classes following AAA and AIARE guidelines to provide a solid foundation for backcountry users and encourage further avalanche education.
Access
We have established a new model for winter recreation on public land by advocating for backcountry users, collaborating on projects like the Berthoud Pass warming hut, sponsoring highway maintenance, and organizing service projects to preserve public lands.
Grassroots Education
Friends of Berthoud Pass’ peer-based avalanche education model trains volunteers to teach backcountry safety, supports their advanced training through a scholarship fund, and fosters a cycle where each generation learns by teaching.
Stewardship
We promote stewardship of Berthoud Pass through annual clean-up events, Leave No Trace education, and advocacy for environmental responsibility, supported by our partnership with 1% for the Planet.

Continuing Education
Our members and board actively engage in conferences, professional organizations, and advanced training, with most instructors holding Avalanche Level 2 and Wilderness First Aid certifications, while sharing expertise and pursuing professional development.
